Description
Doric House is an iron-framed commercial building constructed in 1860, featuring three storeys and an attic. The facade includes four windows, arranged as one wide three-window section and a narrow bay. The high slated mansard roof is adorned with four round-headed dormers and has end and ridge stacks. The building is faced with dark red brick, and a prominent two-storey oriel projection on cast iron brackets dominates the front. This projection has rows of six lights framed by cast iron columns, with ornamental cast iron panels between them and between the floors. The first-floor windows are round-headed and topped with a guilloche patterned frieze. To the right, there is a smaller triangular oriel on the second floor, which is canted below and has a canted cast iron openwork hood above the door. The shop windows are framed by similar openwork resting on slim columns. The roof features cast iron cresting, and a plaque on the first floor identifies the building as a unique example of cast iron structure in Darlington.
