Description
Butter Stone is a roughly-pyramidal boulder that stands about 0.75 metre high. This stone was used during the plague years of 1663 to 1665 as a point for exchanging goods. Inhabitants of Barnard Castle would leave money on the stone for farmers from the region to place produce, allowing both groups to avoid direct contact. The stone is listed for its historical significance.
