Description

COTHERSTONE MOOR ROAD NY 91 NE 999184 (West side, off) 15/62 Butter Stone II

Grooved, roughly-pyramidal boulder about 0.75 metre high. This boulder was used during the 1663-5 plague as an exchange point where the inhabitants of Barnard Castle could leave money for produce left by the farmers of the region without the 2 groups ever meeting. The stone is listed for historical interest.
