Description
Brook House is a mid-18th century house with later 19th-century alterations, located off East Green in Cotherstone. The right-hand section is built of squared rubble with dressed stone facing, while the left-hand section is rendered. The rear elevation is also rendered, and all sections have a stone-flagged roof and stone chimney stacks.
The house is two storeys high and originally had three bays, with a further bay to the left that was formerly a stable and was raised in the late 19th century. It has a low plinth and flush quoins at the ends and the junction between the sections. A central six-panel door, partly glazed, is set in a projecting, chamfered doorway. There is a blank window above the door. Flanking the door are replaced four-pane sashes in projecting, tooled surrounds. The left-hand section has identical sashes with projecting sills and flush lintels. The roof has coped gables and shaped kneelers. There are end stacks and a ridge stack above the junction, all featuring top bands and water tables. A continuous rear outshut extends along the back of the house.
The interior features a dining room fireplace with a large lintel resting on corbelled jambs. A late 18th-century cast-iron grate with a bowed centre and panelled, ornamented sides is located in the right-hand bedroom. A similar grate, but with simpler detailing, is in the central bedroom.
This building should not be confused with Brook Lea House at the northern end of East Green.
