Description

The Manor House is a large house, likely with a mid-17th century core, significantly altered in the early 18th century and again in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of rendered rubble with ashlar detailing, and has a graduated slate roof and stone chimney stacks.

The building presents a continuous two-storey, irregular five-bay front, representing two distinct phases of construction. The left section features raised quoins. A partly-glazed six-panel door sits in a stone doorcase with banded rustication, a superimposed architrave, pulvinated frieze, and cornice hood, located in the third bay. A wide, late 20th century canted bay window has been added to the left; a near-square two-pane sash window is positioned to the right, with matching sashes and surrounds above. The right section, added in the mid-19th century, has two-pane sash windows in projecting surrounds with chamfered sills. The roof has coped gables and shaped kneelers. A rubble stack with a corniced rear section is on the left end, and a tall rebuilt stack with a top band is on the right.

The interior includes a large bolection-moulded stone chimney-piece with a corniced mantel set across the corner of the hall. A two-flight cut-string staircase has stick balusters and a ramped handrail. The roof structure in the older left section of the house comprises two upper crucks of heavy scantling, flanking a central cross wall; the crucks are tenoned into saddles, have halved collars, and support two tiers of trenched purlins. A similar 19th-century cruck of lighter scantling is present in the later right section. A linking section attached to the right return is not of special interest.
