Description
The Grove, which serves as the Bursar's office and Common Room for Durham School, is a house that dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, featuring a rear wing made of rubble below and brick above. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and has flat stone gable copings, with a fishscale pattern on the rear wing and brick chimneys.
The building has two storeys and three bays. The central door, which has been renewed, is set in a 19th-century gabled porch that features a surround made of chamfered keyed voussoirs and alternate-block jambs. The first-floor windows have similar surrounds with projecting stone sills, and all windows are sashes, two of which have glazing bars. The ground floor has projecting square bays that have been inserted. The roof displays moulded kneelers and three ridge chimneys, while the rear wing has a steeply-pitched roof.
Historically, this building was the home of the actor Stephen Kemble in the early 19th century.
