Description
Prebends Bridge is a Grade I listed structure built between 1772 and 1778 by George Nicholson for the Dean and Chapter of Durham. It was restored in 1955-1956. The bridge is constructed from coursed squared sandstone and ashlar, featuring three round arches with rusticated voussoirs and rusticated cutwaters. It has large three-sided buttresses that create refuges in the parapet. Pilasters frame sections of the parapet above the arches, with the outer ones featuring balustrades. The abutments are canted to match the width of the bridge. The parapets have low-chamfered coping that ends in ogee-domed coping, which is part of a continuous band with the parapet coping. The outer faces of the bridge include bands at road bed level and stone drains that protrude beneath them. Prebends Bridge is also a scheduled ancient monument.
