Description

Langley Old Hall is a substantial house dating to around 1700, with later additions and window replacements from the mid-19th century. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, with a rendered return on the left side. The roof is covered in Welsh slate, and the chimneys are rebuilt in brick. The two-storey, six-bay front has flush quoins. The front door, located in the third bay, features a bolection-moulded surround with a steep, open and broken pediment above, incorporating a worn cartouche in the triangular space. The door itself is a 19th-century design with nine panels. There are twelve-pane sash windows with projecting sills and flush, tooled-and-margined lintels. A window has been blocked above the door. The steeply-pitched roof has slightly-swept eaves, coped gable parapets, shaped kneelers and end chimneys. A rear wing, running parallel to the main block, has a central ridge chimney with four 19th-century ornamental chimneypots.

Inside, the early 18th-century staircase is an open-well, closed-string design, spanning six flights plus a landing rail. It has bulbous turned balusters and a square-section handrail with a gripped top. The roof structure retains heavy principal rafters embedded within the walls.
