Description

Rose Cottage is a house dated 1732, with alterations and additions made in the late 19th century. It stands on the north side of Romaldkirk High Green, alongside a front garden wall and gate piers also dating to the 19th century.

The house is constructed of squared sandstone rubble with a blue-slate roof and stone chimney stacks. A dressed sandstone wall runs along the front. It is two storeys high, with three bays, a central doorway, and alternating quoins. The door entablature, partially hidden by a mid-20th century stone porch (which is not of special interest), has a panelled frieze inscribed "17 I:W:P 32." The ends of the cornice project forward over volutes. Windows are set within projecting, nearly-square surrounds and include replaced four-pane sash windows and blocked fire window to the right, with replaced twelve-pane casements to the left and above. The roof has end stacks with top ledges and water tables. A semicircular bread oven projects towards the rear of the right return, and a one-storey rear outshut is also present.

A low garden wall runs along the front, featuring a pair of tooled-and-margined gate piers at its centre and a curved section to the right.
