Description

Thorpe Grange Farmhouse is a house, formerly an inn, dating from the late 18th century. It was reduced in size after a fire in 1944. The building is constructed of squared stone with cut dressings and features a graduated stone slate roof. It has an L-plan layout, is two storeys high, and has three windows. The exterior includes rusticated quoins and a left fielded-panel door with a three-pane overlight, framed by an architrave with a moulded frieze and cornice. To the right, there are old bow windows with 8, 12, and 8-pane sashes, a beaded frieze, and a flat lead top. Above, renewed 12-pane sashes are set in architraves. The gables are coped on moulded kneelers, and there are low corniced stacks at the ends. The rear wing on the right side features a 4-pane sash window with a renewed 12-pane sash above.

Historically, the house is believed to be the former George and New Inn, where Charles Dickens stayed while researching "Nicholas Nickleby." There is a 20th-century extension to the rear and a single-storey wing on the west, which replaced three bays of the original house that were destroyed in the fire; these additions are not of special interest.
