Description
North Road Methodist Church is a Bethel chapel, now serving as a Methodist church, dated 1853 in the top panel. It was designed by E R Robson. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with a rock-faced basement and ashlar dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring stone gable copings. It is designed in a classical style and consists of two storeys with three bays.
There are eight steps leading up to a dentilled pedimented Ionic porch, which has a panelled double door set in a round arch. Flanking the door are fixed lights with lozenge-patterned leading and coloured glass, all under flat stone lintels. Above, there are round-headed sash windows, with the central window being tripartite and stepped, situated under bracketed keyed arches and a drip mould. Sill strings run between Giant Tuscan pilasters that define the bays. The top entablature and pediment feature the inscription "BETHEL CHAPEL" along with the date, set beneath a roundel containing a spiral-spoked wheel.
Plain wrought iron handrails on the steps include plain rods and acanthus-bud principals, and there is a boot-scraper attached to the left of the door.
