Description
The garden walls, gate piers, and gates adjoining the south front of Bowes Hall date from the mid-18th century. They consist of squared rubble walls and ashlar piers, with mid-19th century iron gates. The walls are 2.0 meters high and flat-coped, extending south for about 25 meters from the ends of the house. Shorter sections of the walls connect to the gate piers. The gate piers are square in plan, standing 3.5 meters high, featuring moulded plinths and single fielded panels on each face. They are topped with stepped and corniced caps that are crowned by stone urns. The gates have alternating bars and dogbars, finished with spear-head finials. This structure is included for its group value.
