Description
Nos. 4, 5, and 6 in Hude, Middleton in Teesdale, is a house that has been converted into three separate homes. It is dated 1742 above the door and features late 19th-century alterations. The main building is constructed from irregular courses of squared sandstone with pecked quoins and tooled ashlar dressings, while the extension is made of sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The main roof is stone-flagged with stone gable copings, and the extension has a synthetic stone roof.
The main house, comprising Nos. 4 and 5, is three storeys high and has three bays, while the left extension is two storeys with five bays. The main house features a three-panel door with a two-pane overlight set in an architrave beneath a pulvinated frieze inscribed with "WE 1742" and a cornice. Late 19th-century sash windows above and in the outer bays have plain stone surrounds, with the second-floor windows being shorter. The roof has copings on moulded kneelers and end chimneys. The left extension includes 19th-century elliptical-headed windows.
The left return of the main house displays several throughstones, while the left return of the extension has a 20th-century glazed porch on a stone segmental-headed porch. The rear of the building shows two doors to the main house in a full-width, two-storey outshut under a catslide roof. Sash windows with glazing bars are present in No. 6, along with doors in the first and fourth bays under flat stone lintels.
Inside No. 4, there is a dogleg stair with a moulded grip handrail on column balusters, except for splat balusters on the top flight. The doors are of two, three, and six panels with L-hinges. The roof trusses are reported to be upper crucks, but the roof space was not accessible during the survey. No. 6 is included for its group value.
