Description

House. Built in 1823 by Ignatius Bonomi for the London Lead Company, serving as the agent's house and office. A later 19th-century addition comprises a porch and right wing.

The main structure is built in coursed squared sandstone with ashlar plinth and dressings, and an ashlar porch. The roof is Lakeland slate, with Welsh slate on the left wing. The composition comprises a main block of 3 storeys and 5 bays, with a set-back 2-storey, 3-bay left wing and extension of carriage arch and one-storey, 2-bay service block. A one-storey right extension contains a 1-bay link and projecting one-bay wing.

The main block features double panelled doors in a right-end porch with paired pilasters and blocking course. A window has been inserted in the segmental-headed surround of the original central porch, which has channelled rusticated voussoirs and is extended to a high panelled parapet. The lower floors have 20th-century 12-pane windows set within alternate-block jambs and relieving arches. The top floor retains square 4-pane sashes. A cornice runs below the first-floor relieving arches, with a first-floor sill band. A prominent cornice sits below the attic storey. All mouldings continue around slightly-projecting outer bays, with a top gutter cornice. The low-pitched hipped roof carries corniced ridged chimneys.

The left wing has an arcaded ground-floor arch and windows, with sashes on the first floor of the wing and in the left extension. The right wing contains a window in a keyed surround and an ogee pyramidal roof behind the parapet, topped with urn finials.

The house holds historical interest as the principal London Lead Company building in the area. The interior and rear were not inspected.
