Description

This is a house, now divided into three flats, located on King Street in Barnard Castle. It was built in 1825. The exterior is rough cast render with an ashlar plinth and stone dressings. It has a stone parapet with coping and a brick chimney. The building is two storeys high, with a three-window front, and a narrow, recessed bay that connects to the building at number 22. A step leads to the central panelled front door and overlight, which is recessed within a plain stone surround with a cornice and blocking course. All windows are sash windows with fine glazing bars. Projecting stone lintels are above the long sashes flanking the door, and above the three first-floor windows; the outer first-floor windows have lower sills. There are three blind panels in the roof parapet, the central one bearing the inscription "EDIFICATA JACOBO EWBANK / AD MDCCCXXV". The roof itself is not visible. The left-end chimney has a stone coping. The left return has a door to number 20 in the centre of a blank wall; the right return has a rear door to number 18a, and a window above. The set-back link to number 22 has a central sash window on each floor, the upper one being on a sill band. On the ground floor of the link, a lancet niche is located on the right, above which are two quatrefoil panels. Above the quatrefoils is a central obscured inscription, apparently “MEMOR ESTO BREVIS AEVI,” on a painted stone tablet. On the first floor of the link, single cross arrow slits are positioned either side of the sash window. The interior of the property was not inspected. Number 20 was added to the list on 29th September 1956.
