Description
A pair of houses built in the early 19th century, located on King Street, Barnard Castle. The houses are constructed of coursed squared sandstone with herringbone tooling, featuring an ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings. The left return is of rubble construction, while the right return is rendered. The roof is hidden, with stone gable copings and chimneys.
The houses are three stories high with a four-window facade. A three-step approach leads to a pair of central doors; a six-panel door at number 22 and a four-panel door at number 24. These doors are set within plain stone surrounds, with corner patera supporting a hood over the door at number 22 and a pedimented lintel over the door at number 24. The sashes have glazing bars, with the upper-floor sashes being smaller. A deep eaves gutter cornice runs along the top. The low-pitched roof has stone gable copings and banded end chimneys. A first-floor sash window is visible on the right return.
Internally, number 22 has fluted door architraves with patera, an entrance hall with reeded arch, panelled window shutters, and a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed mahogany handrail. Number 24 has steps in the entrance hall, a late 19th-century hall door and arch, and is reported to have reeded architraves with patera to doors on the upper floors.
