Description
The dovecote, located 45 metres south of Gainford Hall, dates from the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with a roughly-dressed sandstone interior. The structure is circular, measuring 5.6 metres in diameter, and tapers slightly, standing about 6 metres high. It features three stages that are defined by projecting stone bands. On the northeast side, there is a low, square-headed entrance with a chamfered lintel and alternating jambs, which retains a wide-boarded and studded plank door. Inside, the dovecote contains stone nesting boxes and alighting ledges. The roof is domed and includes an irregular central oculus.
