Harthope Farm Byre And Barn Ranges With Dovecote

Harthope Farm consists of a byre and barn ranges with a dovecote, dating from the mid-18th century for the dovecote and byres, and around 1800 for the barn. The structures are built from thin courses of mixed rubble, featuring ashlar dressings and quoins, with roofs made of stone flags, concrete tiles, and corrugated iron. The layout is L-shaped.

The north range includes a one-storey byre with two wide bays, and a two-storey dovecote with one bay to the right. Each bay of the byre has a boarded door at the center, with a flat stone lintel on the left and a plain stone surround on the right. The dovecote has a similar plain surround for its boarded door on the left, and a boarded loft door below the eaves, which includes pigeon holes and a wide stone shelf. The right side of the dovecote features side stone steps leading to a boarded door. The roof of the byres has 20th-century materials on the south pitch and stone flags on the north, while the dovecote has a pyramidal roof that is stone-flagged with a dodecahedron finial and a central square chimney on the byre.

To the left, a one-storey barn with three wide bays projects from the range. It has a central boarded door beneath a pecked stone lintel, flanked by ventilation slits, and features a new stone roof. The barn was empty at the time of the survey.
