Description

The Bedal tomb, located approximately 16 metres southwest of the Church of St. Mary, is a headstone dating from around 1779, commemorating William Bedal. It is made of sandstone and stands about 0.5 metres high. The east face features a moulded surround with a domed centre at the top, which frames the commemorative inscription. The west face has a higher, scroll-topped head above a corniced panel that contains a well-cut verse: "From my sad Cradle/to my Sable Chest/Poor pilgrim I did find/few years of Rest/But now I rest my soul ...", with the text continuing below ground level.
