Description
Nos. 53, 54, 55 and 55A on Old Elvet are three terraced houses from the early 19th century. They feature incised stucco with a stone plinth, a first-floor band, and other decorative elements. The buildings are three stories high, with three bays each, and are nearly symmetrical. The center section has a pediment and is slightly set forward. Each house has panelled doors with stepped, panelled pilasters, cornice heads, and wide, patterned radial fanlights, located in the right bay of No. 53 and the left bays of the other two houses. The sash windows have glazing bars in plain reveals, with the ground floor windows set in round-arched recesses and featuring radial heads. No. 55 has 19th-century cross casements on the first floor and a 20th-century square bay on the ground floor. There is a narrow, blank left bay that contains a subsidiary door to No. 55. The buildings also have an eaves frieze, cornice, and a tall parapet, along with wrought-iron handrails leading to the door steps.
