Description
The University Department of Philosophy consists of two houses located at Nos. 50 and 51 Old Elvet in Durham, with No. 50 dating from the mid to late 18th century and No. 51 from the early to mid 19th century. Both buildings are finished in stucco with a stone plinth and feature Welsh slate roofs and brick chimneys.
No. 50 has three storeys and an attic, with two wide and irregular bays. It includes an arched passage entrance on the right, next to a six-panel door set in an architrave beneath a fanlight and an open pediment. To the left, there is a two-storey bow with a parapet top. The other windows are single and are early 20th-century replacements, featuring upper glazing bars and stone sills. The building has end chimneys and an inserted gabled dormer.
No. 51 has a four-panel door with an overlight in an architrave on the left side. It features two 12-pane sash windows in boxes with stone sills on each floor. The roof is low-pitched with no visible chimneys.
The interior of No. 50 is reported to have a late 18th-century open-string dogleg staircase with a ramped handrail supported by stick balusters.
