Description
No. 52 Old Elvet is a house that appears to date from the early 19th century but has undergone significant alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of mottled pinkish brick in Flemish bond, with a stone plinth, alternating quoins, and other stone dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and features brick chimneys. The building has three storeys and four bays. The second bay contains a six-panel door with an overlight, framed by a modified pilaster-and-entablature surround. The sash windows, which have glazing bars and stone sills (bracketed on the lower floors), are set in architraves on the ground floor, with corniced stone lintels on the first floor and plain lintels above. The upper floors have external louvred shutters. There is a first-floor sill band, a stone modillioned eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The building has end chimneys and a stone-corniced ridge stack.
Inside, the property is reported to have an open well closed-string staircase with a high grip handrail.
