Description
Nos. 47, 48, and 49 Old Elvet is a terrace of three houses, now functioning as two, built in the early 18th century. The houses are constructed of dark red brick in English garden wall bond, sitting on a stone-coped plinth, and topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring brick chimneys. The structure has three storeys and an attic, comprising eleven bays arranged as 2, 5, and 4.
In bays three and four from the left, there are steps leading up to six-panel paired doors with tall overlights set within a Doric doorcase. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, housed in box frames beneath segmental brick arches, and feature tall shaped and reeded stone keys that rise to four-brick floor bands, except on the top floor where there are plain soldier arches. The roof is high-pitched with swept eaves and a deep soffit, and there are stacks at the ends, center, and rear. Segment-headed double and single dormers have been inserted.
The interiors are reported to include dogleg open-string stairs with ramped, moulded handrails supported by slender column balusters, as well as a ramped, panelled dado.
