Description
These are three houses located on Hallgarth Street in Durham. They were originally built in the 17th century and have undergone alterations and extensions since. The exterior is painted incised stucco with painted ashlar dressings and a pantiled roof featuring three rows of stone slates at the eaves. The rear wing is constructed of brick and rubble.
The houses are three stories high and have seven bays with an irregular arrangement of windows. Number 54, on the left, comprises three bays and has a boarded front door in the third bay. Number 55 consists of two bays with a renewed nine-panel front door on the left side. Number 56 also has two bays and a four-panelled front door on the left, set within a raised stone surround. The windows are predominantly sashes, some of which have been replaced, with glazing bars and projecting stone sills (four sills are on the ground floor, five on the first). The top floor has three horizontal sliding sashes and one casement window, the rightmost window lacking a sill. The roof is hipped on the left side, with a chimney located to the left of number 56 and at the right end. A two-story, four-window rear wing features a ground-level elliptical brick relieving arch.
Inside number 54, there is a staircase with a dog-leg first flight and winders above, along with substantial timber first-floor joists and a queen-post roof. Number 56 includes an enclosed staircase and a brick chimney stack on the top floor, with altered roof trusses.
