Description
The Railway Viaduct over the River Balder is a disused railway structure built in 1868 for the Tees Valley Railway Company. It is constructed from snecked, rock-faced sandstone with grey brick arches and tunnels, and features cast-iron railings. The tall viaduct spans a wide and deep river valley.
It consists of nine round arches supported by eight battered piers and end abutments. Some piers have a double row of throughstones located below the springing line. The arches are arranged in four rows of header bond, while the tunnels are in stretcher bond. The low parapet, situated above a stone band, is topped with railings that have ball joints, and the end piers are capped with pyramidal tops.
This viaduct crosses the parishes of Cotherstone and Hunderthwaite.
