Description
The outbuildings north of Frosterley House consist of a byre, henhouse, stables, and a coachhouse, which is now used as a garage. They were built around 1840 and are constructed from squared sandstone rubble with quoins, featuring ashlar and brick dressings, and a stone-flagged roof. The buildings are arranged in an L-plan.
The two-storey, three-bay stable has a one-storey pent coachhouse at the right end and a two-storey, one-bay byre that projects forward on the left. There is a bank entry to the first-floor henhouse located at the rear of the byre. The former stable has a central boarded door set in a square-headed stone surround, with flat stone lintels above a hit-and-miss opening to the left and a fixed light to the right. A long row of pigeon holes is situated at the eaves, divided by brick verticals.
On the right side, there are boarded carriage doors beneath a low segmental arch with voussoirs. The left wing features a front gable with two small fixed lights on the first floor and a wide fixed light with glazing bars above it, along with a boarded door on the inner return. The forecourt is cobbled with river-worn stones.
