Description
This listing describes a group of tombs located approximately 6 meters south of the Church of St Mary in Barnard Castle. The tombs include a chest tomb, an adjacent grave cover, and two headstones.
The chest tomb, made of ashlar, dates from the early 19th century and is dedicated to Ann, the wife of Edward Simpson of Croft Lodge. It features pulvinated Tuscan angle pilasters and moulded side slabs that support a top with moulded edges, although the inscriptions have eroded over time.
The grave cover to the south is from around 1830 and commemorates Captain Robert Kipling, who served in the 43rd Light Infantry Regiment and lived from 1757 to 1830, along with his wife Sarah, who died in 1849.
One of the headstones is approximately 0.4 meters high with a serpentine top, inscribed with the details of Robert, the son of Robert and Isabell Walker, who died on August 22, 1741. The taller headstone, about 0.8 meters high with a shaped top, is dedicated to Ann, the daughter of Robert and Jane Kipling, who died in 1772 at the age of 5, and to Jane, the wife of Robert, who died in 1747.
