Description

This is a house dating to around 1760, located on the north side of Gilesgate in Durham and Framwellgate. The house is constructed of incised stucco, with painted quoins and a plinth, and has a Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys. It is three storeys high and has three irregular bays. The front door, which is six panels wide, is set within a deep panelled reveal and an entablature doorcase featuring a bracketed, modillioned cornice. Late 19th-century sash windows have projecting stone sills on the ground and second floors; a sill band runs along the length of the longer windows on the first floor. The rusticated ground floor features a section of smaller blocks above the window. The steeply-pitched roof has a chimney at the right end. The right gable displays a decorative header course in the shape of a Flemish gable, incorporating a shaft and string.
