Description

The Earle and Collingwood tombs, located about 3 metres south of the Church of St. Thomas in Stanhope, date back to the 18th and early 19th centuries. These two headstones commemorate Jan, the wife of Jacob Earle, who died in 1770, and Jenning and Sarah Collingwood, who died in 1797 and 1823 at the ages of 24 and 23, respectively.

The tombs are made of sandstone and stand approximately one metre high. The Earle headstone features a fine-grained surface with an elaborately-shaped top and well-cut inscriptions, including verses on each side. The reverse side reads: "Tir'd with travelling thro' this world of sin / At length am come to nature's common Inn / In this dark place here for to rest a night / In hopes to rise that Christ may give me light."

The Collingwood headstone also has a shaped top and tooled sides, with an inscription on the reverse that states: "Mourn not my Friends / Because I died soon / And my Days Journey / Finished at Noon."
