Description
This is a headstone located 4 metres south-west of the organ chamber of the Church of Holy Trinity, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is made of cut sandstone and stands 0.55 metres high with a shaped top. The east side features an eroded inscription, while the west side displays a high-relief carving of a trumpeting angel among stars and other motifs, accompanied by a worn inscription that reads:
'The angels sound, The dead must rise The serpent's mouth, Did dark ye scyes'
On the north edge, there is a relief carving of a skeleton with a spear, and on the south edge, a serpent on a pole. The inscription is referenced in the Victoria County History of the North Riding, Volume I, page 137.
