Description
The Square, consisting of numbers 3 to 6 and a farmbuilding range to the left of number 6, is a group of four houses and a farmbuilding range dating from the mid-18th century. The buildings are constructed from rubble with tooled and margined quoins and dressings, topped with graduated stone slate roofs. The houses are arranged in an L-plan and are two storeys high. Numbers 3 and 4, which face north, each have two bays, while numbers 5 and 6, facing west, each have three irregular bays. The entrances feature six-panelled doors, two of which have overlights, while number 4 has a boarded door. There are also two boarded doors to the right of number 5's entrance. The ground floor has 16-pane sash windows, and the upper floor has 12-pane sashes. Most of the openings on numbers 3 and 4 are framed in stone. The roof of number 6 is hipped to the left, and each house has a single banded ridge stack.
The left return of number 6 and the rear farmbuilding range create a nearly symmetrical composition with one bay on the left and three bays in the center, followed by one bay on the right. This section features an upright slab plinth and a first-floor band. The central boarded door has a radial fanlight set in a round arch, with a boarded pitching door above. There are similar doorways in the flanking bays, which are now blocked. The right end has 12-pane Yorkshire sash windows on both floors. The slightly projecting end bays include tall blind arches with impost bands, with the left arch containing an inserted window; the roof here is also hipped to the left. The left return of the range shows a large 20th-century opening. An added smithy, featuring a cart entrance under a timber lintel, is located to the left, along with a 16-pane sash window and a stack at the left end.
