Description

The War Memorial located on the Village Green in Murton is a significant cenotaph dedicated to the memory of those who served in the First and Second World Wars. Made of granite and bronze, the memorial features a cenotaph constructed from granite blocks, which stands on a square plinth atop a rectangular stepped base. The head of the cenotaph is adorned with carvings of laurel wreaths and shields that bear crosses in relief.

The main inscription on the front reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF/THE MEN OF/MURTON/WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/WHILST SERVING THEIR COUNTRY 1914-1918/THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE/ERECTED BY THE WORKMEN AND OFFICIALS/OF MURTON COLLIERY." Below this, on the plinth, there is an additional inscription that states: "ALSO/TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND/IN MEMORY OF THOSE OF/MURTON AND DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945."

The names of 536 individuals who fell during the First World War are inscribed in two columns on each side and in four columns on the rear, arranged alphabetically by surname. The names of those who died in the Second World War are also recorded in four columns on the sides and rear of the plinth.

This memorial was commissioned and erected by Murton Colliery and serves as a prominent reminder of the strong local ties to the community, many of whom were former miners. It is recognized for its attractive design and craftsmanship, making it a notable tribute to the fallen of both World Wars.
