Description
The granary and meal house, located to the north of East Farmhouse in East Murton, is likely the original farmhouse that was later repurposed. It dates from the late 17th century, with significant alterations made in the 18th or 19th century. The structure is built of limewashed rubble and features pantiled roofs. It has a narrow rectangular plan and is a single storey high.
To the right is a tall two-bay granary, while the lower two-bay meal house is to the left. Each building has a single doorway, which is flanked by slatted windows, and all openings are topped with oak lintels. Inside, on the cross-wall separating the granary from the meal house, there is a blocked fireplace with a late 17th-century Tudor-arched head set in a rectangular moulded frame, along with a recess for a spice cupboard to the left. The rear side of this cross-wall in the meal house shows the remains of two corbels that once supported the original chimney stack. Additionally, the rear of the granary features an external stone staircase that leads to the loft. The roof timbers of both buildings were renewed in the 19th century.
