Description
Five Walton tombs and one Bell tomb are located approximately 14 metres south of the porch of the Church of St. Mary in Middleton in Teesdale. These six headstones date from 1749 to 1818 and bear inscriptions for members of the Walton family, with names including William, John, Elizabeth, and George, as well as for Mary Bell, extending to 1876. The tombs are made of sandstone ashlar slabs, standing between 0.5 to 0.8 metres high, each featuring a shaped top. Some of the headstones have verses inscribed on the rear.
One headstone for Elizabeth, who died in 1772, includes the verse: "Farewell vain world I must thee leave/To dust I must return/For out of it I first was made/Therefore forbear to mourn/Twas in the dawning of my years/That Death to me was sent/To you that have a longer time/Be careful to repent/For in my health I little thought/My glass was run so near/But now the time for me is come/No longer to be here."
Another headstone for Elizabeth, who died in 1720, reads: "All things will turn for good/If you the Lord do fear this is/the charge I leave to you my/Children dear stick close unto/ this God of mine, which I have/found so true and what you see/hes done for me heel do the/same for you."
