Description
1, 2 and 3 Hutchinson Terrace is a former almshouse, now three dwellings, founded in 1674 by William Hutchinson and completely rebuilt in 1829. The building is constructed of tooled-and-margined, dressed sandstone, featuring graduated green slate roofs and stone chimney stacks. It has a shallow T-plan and is designed in the Tudor style.
The structure is one storey high with a symmetrical front, which includes a projecting pedimented two-bay center (No. 2) and flanking four-bay wings (Nos. 1 and 3). The center features two replaced casement windows in original openings beneath hoodmoulds, an identical window on the left return, and a partly-glazed door set in a slightly-projecting stone porch on the right return. Above the porch is a raised shield inscribed with:
These Almshouses founded by Wm. Hutchinson Of Clement's Inn London 1674 were rebuilt 1829.
The wings have partly-glazed four-panel doors and identical windows under continuous hoodmoulds. The building has a continuous eaves cornice, with a roof that features coped gables and is hipped at the junction with the center. There are octagonal-plan, corniced end stacks and four ridge stacks.
At the rear of No. 2, there is a re-set plaque from the original almshouse, inscribed: W.H. 1674.
