Description
The railway viaduct and drinking fountain attached to it were built in 1857, likely designed by T.E. Harrison for the North Eastern Railway Company. The viaduct is constructed from rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings and features brick soffits. It stands 100 feet high and has 11 arches, supported by tapered piers with coped plinths. The arches are round, and there is a continuous drip string along the structure. The parapet has been altered, except over the end piers where it remains flat-coped.
The Gothic-style fountain is located on the south face of the pier to the west of North Road. It has a shouldered surround that encloses a small two-centred arch at the base. Above this, shafts support a gabled canopy adorned with nail-head moulding, which contains a scroll with an illegible inscription and date. The stepped gabled surround features blind trefoils beneath each step and is topped with crocketed coping.
