Description
This is a mid-18th century house, later used as a shop and now again as a house, located on Station Road in Bishop Auckland. The exterior is characterised by incised render, a painted plinth, and ashlar dressings. It has a synthetic tile roof and brick and rendered chimneys. The building is two storeys high, with a two-by-one window arrangement. The front, facing Station Road, has two wide steps leading to an 8-panel door, positioned to the right of the centre. The door is set within a painted stone surround with the inscription “H/CE/1741”. A small, 19th-century shop window is located on the left, featuring four panes beneath a frieze and cornice. The right-hand side windows have painted projecting stone sills, and the first-floor windows are fitted with 20th-century casements. The left return, which faces Front Street, has a 19th-century shop front with narrow pilasters supporting a fascia and cornice. A recessed door is on the right, and a wide shop window with top glazing bars is on the left. A single 20th-century casement is positioned above. The steeply pitched roof has swept eaves and raised gables with end chimneys.
