Description
Walton Bridge, also known as Ribble Bridge, is a stone bridge over the River Ribble, constructed between 1779 and 1781 by John, Samuel, and Robert Laws. The bridge was significantly widened on the west side between 1939 and 1950 by Ormerod and Shields. It features V-shaped cutwaters and three long segmental arches with rusticated voussoirs, which are flanked by stepped pilasters. The bridge has a dentilled cornice and a plain parapet that is moulded on the top.
On the inner face of the east parapet, there is incised lettering that reads: "RIBBLE BRIDGE BUILT by John Sam L & Robt Laws Under the Inspection of Mr. Richd Threlfall in 1779, 80 & 81, cost £4,200." This bridge replaced an earlier structure located approximately 90 metres downstream and was the site of the earliest bridge at Preston, which remained the only bridge until 1755. Part of the bridge is located within the former boundaries of Preston.
