Description

St James Vicarage, along with its attached coach house, is a small villa dating from around 1800, which has been altered over time. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a rectangular double-depth plan and stands two storeys high over cellars, with three symmetrical bays. The façade includes a stone plinth, rusticated quoins, a moulded cornice, a low parapet, and a shallow hipped roof.

The central bay is slightly recessed and features a giant semi-circular blind arch. Within this arch is a wide basket-arched doorway with a gauged brick head, a rendered inner surround, a six-panel door with panelled jambs, narrow side windows, and a fanlight adorned with Edwardian stained glass. Above the doorway, on the first floor, there is a 12-pane sashed window, which has four panes in the upper leaf and eight in the lower, with a raised sill and a lintel partly obscured by the arch.

Flanking the central entrance, the ground floor has two very large canted bay windows, likely added in the mid-19th century, each consisting of four lights without glazing bars, topped with a cornice and a blocking course that features a central upstand. The first floor has tripartite sashed windows with raised sills and wedge lintels. The side walls have chimneys, and the left return wall includes one blind window on each floor, along with a small sashed window with glazing bars. The right return wall has been altered due to the demolition of a former service wing.

At the rear, there is a small lean-to in the center, with a four-pane stair window above it, a 16-pane sash window to the left, and two sashes on the first floor. There are also steps leading down to a cellar doorway, which is now blocked. The former coach house, linked to the vicarage by a short screen wall, is a small square single-storey building featuring quoins, a large square window, and a pyramidal roof.

Inside, the cellar ceiling is supported by slender cast-iron columns, and there is a dog-legged staircase with cast-iron ornamental open-work balusters.
