Description
A row of three small town houses dating from approximately 1840 to 1845, and altered subsequently. The houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings, and have a slate roof. They follow a double-depth plan, with each house having a single frontage and individual rear extensions. Each house has two storeys over cellars and originally had four windows at the first floor (two at number 34). A sill band runs along the first floor, above a plain frieze and a moulded gutter cornice. The doorways, located on the right-hand side of each house, are round-headed, featuring set-in Tuscan quarter columns, plain lintels, and cavetto surrounds to the fanlights; the fanlight at number 30 has radiating glazing bars. The ground floor windows are sash windows, without glazing bars at number 30, and altered at numbers 32 and 34, all with raised sills and wedge lintels. There are two ridge chimney stacks. The interiors and rear of the properties were not inspected. The row was originally part of a larger group of six houses. These houses form a group with numbers 26-32 and 38-44 St Austin’s Place, and the Church of St Augustine opposite.
