Description
The Cottage is a house dated 1675, although it shows signs of earlier construction and has been altered over time. It is built of roughcast brick and has a concrete slate roof featuring one ridge chimney stack and an additional chimney on the left side. The building has an L-shaped, three-bay baffle-entry plan with a forward projection in the first bay, and it stands two storeys high. There is a single-storey gabled porch at the junction of the second and third bays, and above this porch, on the first floor, is a rectangular datestone inscribed with "1675 R de H" (indicating Richard Hoghton). All the windows are modern casements with glazing bars. The wall of the right gable is slightly recessed above the eaves level. Inside, there are timber-framed partition walls and evidence of earlier timber framing in the outer walls, such as a tie beam incorporated in the right gable at eaves level. The interior also features an inglenook with a chamfered bressumer, quarter-round moulded beams, and original strutted roof trusses.
