Description
The Walton-le-Dale War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, built in 1920. It is made of Portland stone and is located within a small enclosure at the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady and St Patrick.
The memorial features a carved, pedimented crucifix that rises from a rectangular classical plinth, which is set upon a low, square base. The dedication is inscribed on a slate panel in the center of the plinth, stating:
"ERECTED/TO THE MEN /OF THIS/ PARISH/ WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY/IN THE/ GREAT WAR."
Below this is a depiction of an Alisee Patee cross, accompanied by the inscription:
"ETERNAL/REST GRANT/UNTO THEM/O’LORD/AND LET/PERPETUAL/LIGHT SHINE/UPON THEM."
The memorial lists the names of 29 individuals who fell in the First World War and 13 who fell in the Second World War, inscribed on slate panels fixed to the right and left sides in single columns by surname and date of death. Additional slate panels have been added to the base, which also features a small stone urn fixed in front of the right panel.
