Description

New Bridge is a road bridge over Bowcombe Creek, originally built in 1845 but rebuilt in the later 19th century and likely repaired in the 20th century. It is constructed of slatestone rubble and features a five arch span with segmental arches and triangular cutwaters between them. The bridge has a plain low parapet. It was initially designed to accommodate a new road to Dartmouth in 1845 as a swing bridge by A. Saunders of Kingsbridge. The construction is based on a strong horizontal framework of wood that rests on a timber fulcrum, which is built into a solid mass of masonry.
