Description
Charleton Court is a house dating from the early to mid 17th century, which was significantly remodeled in the mid 19th century. It features stone rubble walls that are roughly coursed on the front block and has a gable-ended slate roof with Victorian crested ridge tiles. There are two brick axial stacks. The building has a complex plan that is difficult to interpret without internal access. The front block is T-shaped, with a long wing extending from its left-hand end. While the original extent of the house is uncertain, the front range is likely original, though raised in height, and consists of a three-room plan with a short central wing. The rear wing was likely used for service purposes in the 19th century and included a kitchen; it has since been divided off from the main house.
The exterior is three storeys high with a basement, while the rear wing is two storeys. The front has a regular three-window layout with a short projecting central wing. The 19th-century wooden mullions include some ovolo-moulded designs, with casement windows of two and three lights. There are 20th-century glazed double doors inserted to the right on the ground floor, along with a circa early 20th-century lean-to timber porch to their left at the angle with the wing. The windows on this front wall are adorned with stone hoodmoulds. The interior was inaccessible at the time of the survey but may contain more 19th-century features than 17th-century ones, which could be of good quality and interest.
