Description
The Kingsbridge and Dodbrooke War Memorial is a First World War memorial built between 1924 and 1925, with alterations made after the Second World War. It is constructed from stone, granite, and Italian marble.
The memorial features a statue of Hope, depicted with her anchor, which is set on a moulded and carved base. This base rests on a tall, square-section plinth that has a deeply-moulded cap and foot. The faces of the plinth are adorned with polished granite plaques that display inscriptions in gold lettering. These inscriptions read: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEN / OF KINGSBRIDGE AND DODBROOKE / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES / AS A RESULT OF THE / GREAT WAR 1914-1918 / DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI," followed by the names of 68 soldiers who died in the conflict. The memorial also commemorates the 1939-1945 conflict, listing the names of 30 soldiers and 16 civilians who lost their lives during the Second World War. The memorial is situated on a three-stepped platform made of rough-faced granite, within an area of paving.
