Description

Totnes Bridge, built around 1826-1828 by architect Charles Fowler, was constructed under the Act of 1825. It is located at the lowest fording-point of the tidal River Dart. The bridge features a fine triple-arched design over the main river, with a smaller arch over the western area. It is made of Devonian limestone ashlar and includes granite cutwaters. The segmental arches are adorned with vermiculated, rusticated voussoirs. The cutwater piers have rusticated pilasters topped with triangular caps. The ends of the bridge are marked by wide, pedimented piers that contain niches. The parapet and coping feature a moulded cornice below.
