Description
Ford Farmhouse is a mid-17th century, three-bay farmhouse oriented on a north-south axis. It has two storeys plus an attic, with elevations made of local rubblestone, now mostly rendered. The front and rear elevations feature projecting central gabled bays that extend to full height. The gabled roof is covered with concrete tiles and has two substantial rendered gabled stacks, each with two diagonally set shafts that have been rebuilt in brick.
The front (east) elevation displays four symmetrically arranged, sixteen-paned sash windows with horns, which have been recently replaced. A central porch includes a large, square-headed doorway with a recessed original planked and boarded door fitted with pintel hinges. Above this is an original two-light, ovolo-moulded window, with a two-light casement in the attic storey. The rear (west) elevation features a central gabled stair outshut with two small rectangular openings. To the left on the ground floor is a large four-light, ovolo-moulded window with square leaded lights, and a modern casement above it. To the right of the stair outshut is a twelve-paned hornless sash window on the ground floor, alongside a small two-light ovolo-moulded casement and a 19th-century casement window above it on the first floor.
Attached to the south end of the farmhouse is a single-bay, one-and-a-half storey gabled kitchen, which has a later lean-to on the rear (west) side. A large stack rises to full two-storey height with an offset square shaft. The south gable features symmetrically arranged pigeon holes, retaining some shelves. There is a doorway on the east front and an enlarged window opening on the ground floor of the south gable, with a later two-light casement above in the original opening.
Inside, the farmhouse retains simple ceiling beams and two original spiral staircases, one of which has heavy timber treads in the outshut. The ground floor has flagstone floors, and the original "A" frame roof features heavy principals. There is a cast iron Regency firegrate in the north bedroom, and a blocked open fire with an exposed bressumer in the central room on the first floor. Some original planked doors remain.
