Description

Nos. 10-18 Clarence Place (even numbers) is a group of shops, offices, and accommodation on upper floors, built as a three-story, six-bay range including an entrance bay. The building is constructed of brick and stone, with a replaced machine-tile roof and modest, corniced brick stacks. The design is asymmetrical, intended to include an end bay on the right to match number 18 at the end on the left. Pilasters rise from the first through to the second floor, defining each bay; all shopfronts have been remodelled, and all windows are horned sashes with multipane upper lights and plate glass lower lights.

The entrance bay is off-centre to the right and is constructed of rusticated ashlar with a segmental arched parapet incorporating a cartouche. It features a round-arched window on the second floor and a two-light window on the first floor, both flanked by enriched Ionic pilasters. The ground floor entrance has a matching, bracketed hood supported on giant pilasters. The bays to each side and the end on the left have a three-window range of sashes with eared and shouldered surrounds. The second floor of these bays has aprons to the side windows and carved panels with swags at the centre, set below an egg and dart cornice and a balustraded parapet. The intervening bays, specifically the first and fifth from the right, also feature a three-window range of similar sashes. A decorative entablature features above the central second-floor window, set under a swept segmental-arched gable with a small pierced light. Piers with orbs terminate the balustrade above the dividing pilasters of these bays.
