Description

The cowhouse and stable at Lower Celliau is a one-and-a-half-storey structure built from rubble stone, topped with a steeply pitched corrugated asbestos roof. The south front features a large central gabled dormer with a horizontally boarded head. On the ground floor, from left to right, there is a doorway leading to the cowhouse with a timber lintel, a doorway to a calving pen with a boarded half door, and two adjoining doorways to the stable, one of which has a massive oak frame and a plank and batten door. Further right is a square window opening with a timber lintel, which was formerly a three-light diamond mullion window.

The north elevation includes, from left to right, a partly blocked opening with a timber lintel, a stable doorway with a massive oak chamfered frame and a plank and batten door with strap hinges, and a square window opening that was previously a five-light diamond mullion. The west gable features a boarded loft door and a ground-floor window with a timber lintel. Attached to the east gable is a small gabled extension with a corrugated asbestos roof and a ruined end wall.

Inside, the building consists of five bays with tie-beam trusses that have raking queen struts and three tiers of purlins. There is a transverse partition separating the byre from a small pen for calves. The cowhouse was originally lofted.
