Description
The stable at Blaentrothy is a two-storey lofted stable block dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a corrugated metal roof. The window and door openings are segmentally arched and have stone voussoirs. On the south elevation, the ground floor includes a stable doorway on the left and a square window opening on the right. The east gable has an upper doorway that leads to the pitching loft.
This lofted stable consists of three bays. The roof trusses are particularly unusual because the principal tie beams are cut through, likely to create more space. Tall posts extend from the soffit of the collar above and are tenoned into the top of the floor beam of the loft below. The inner ends of the cut-through tie beams are tenoned into the sides of these posts, allowing the posts to effectively act as a tie that contains the lateral thrust of the roof.
