Description
The barn at Blaentrothy is a 19th-century structure built from red sandstone rubble and topped with a corrugated metal roof. It features opposing doorways that lead to an off-centre threshing floor, which are currently without barn doors. The door-head facing the farmyard is slightly raised and has a flat canopy. The west front, to the left of the threshing floor, includes two tiers of three ventilation slits. To the right, there is a blocked window opening with a shallow timber lintel, followed by a square window and a boarded door under a single shallow lintel. The east elevation mirrors this with similar tiered vent slits on the right side, while the left side has a blocked doorway and, next to the gable, a bay where the upper wall is timber framed and the lower wall is infilled with stone. The north gable is covered with corrugated metal sheeting at the upper section, while the south gable is made of stone and features a triangular vent at the apex.
The barn consists of five bays and has trusses with raking queen struts and two tiers of trenched purlins. At the lower end, separated by a low timber framed partition, is a cow byre that was formerly lofted. The floor beam of the loft supports two tall raking struts that are morticed into the soffit of the tie beam of the roof truss above, and it also serves as the top rail of the timber framed partition below. This partition is boarded and features stout vertical wall studs along with a central doorway leading into the byre.
